A Story Worth Telling

A letter, a typewriter,
and Jane Fonda

In 1982, a 22-year-old kid from Detroit sat at his grandmother's barely working typewriter and wrote Jane Fonda a letter. Three weeks later, the phone rang. What followed were 17 aerobic exercise shows spanning the US and Canada — a tour that sent Fonda's book to #3 in Simon & Schuster history and her instructional record into the Billboard Top 20.

Forty-two years later, in La Jolla, May 2024, they met again. Two people whose lives had each taken extraordinary turns — still connected by what they'd built together.

"It was an honor and a privilege traveling across America with Jane Fonda. I learned so much — she taught me all about morals, principles, and scruples."

— Alan D. Sklar

The Memoir

A life lived
without a script

From producing sold-out shows across the US and Canada in the 1980s — booking Sylvester, Jennifer Holliday, and Thelma Houston — to managing Jane Fonda's landmark 1982 workout tour, Alan Sklar built a career by instinct and sheer will.

Then came the pivot: from entertainment to media, real estate, and ultimately specialty food. From Detroit to Driven is the candid, often surprising memoir of a man who reinvented himself, more than once.

"Celebrity Influence"

It was 1982. A 22-year-old red-headed kid from Detroit sat at his grandmother's barely working typewriter and wrote Jane Fonda a letter. Three weeks later, he received a call. After a few conversations, this young producer — Alan Sklar — produced the first of 17 aerobic exercise shows spanning the US and Canada, starring the famous actress.

This success took the book to the #3 best seller in the history of Simon & Schuster, the instructional record album to the top 20 on the Billboard charts, and the aerobic video tied in sales to her then-film On Golden Pond.

"It was an honor and a privilege traveling across America with Jane Fonda. I learned so much — she taught me all about morals, principles, and scruples."

— Alan D. Sklar

Fast forward to La Jolla, California, May 2024 — where Alan and Jane meet again after over four decades. These days Sklar helms De Lux Farms, his organic food distribution business. In addition, he is an ambassador for the app Too Good To Go, which was started in Denmark in 2015.

Sklar says: "We have now collectively saved over 10 million meals from landfills across America in the past year alone." The app connects restaurants, bakeries, and others in the food industry with consumers who purchase a discounted surprise bag of still-fresh food at the end of the day — reducing waste while delivering value.

Asked what he and Fonda will speak about when they meet after all these years, Sklar says: "I will thank her for teaching me, by example, the importance of consciously taking care of our planet and mankind by the actions we take in our everyday life."

"Stay curious, keep learning, and keep growing. And always strive to be more interested than interesting."

— Jane Fonda
